Care Package #7: Elizabeth Chan

I find Chloe's work inspiring because she's committed to developing a deep embodied connection to the Earth. In contrast, I often feel disconnected to my own body and to the land beneath my feet.

Blood and Sand links Chloe's theme of monthly bleeding to the figurative and literal spilling of blood (damage to both humans and the environment) due to the sand trade. Coney Island is the park closest to my home and I take frequent walks there, each time making sure to stop by the beach where I can look at Pulau Ubin (and Pasir Gudang) from afar. I wonder where the sand beneath my feet came from, I wonder if Coney Island is a representation of what 'nature' is supposed to look like, and I notice all the warning signs.

Elizabeth Chan is a dance practitioner-researcher and a current doctoral candidate at the National University of Singapore (Theatre Studies). As of 2020, she is searching for new ways to exist in this more-than-human world, through playing with paints, poetry and plants.
