Care Package #6: Tristan Lim

Tristan Lim- Knock Off (2020).png

Knock Off is a digital illustration comprising the detritus of a dated photo capture. The photo was a capture for another artwork and was eventually not used as material; it only surfaced again as a suggestion from an Ipad. The contents of the photo was then chopped, mixed and remixed in a process of spontaneity and impulse into its current form.

The title involves the meaning of knock off as an often inferior copy of something else, an admission of the resulting image being much like a digital rendition of 'zombie abstractions' so often found in the 2010s; and also knock off as getting off work-a genuine feeling of relief of making something almost completely unobjective. A sketch with no overt purpose, to be shared and laughed at over messaging apps and conversations with friends.

Tristan Lim is a visual artist whose practice questions the manner in which we perceive and value virtuality and reality in contemporary life. Examining the forms in which images, brands and visual materials circulate and manifest in culture, relationships between disparate things are uncovered, surfacing questions of material and existential significance.
