Silver Balloons in a Bleak Bleak Sky

Balloon has a shape that resembles the human face.

The colour silver is something metallic

non organic, something that you do not find on a human face.

Balloons in silver,

the colour of peace and prosperity,

a colour that cannot be created with primary colours.

The dark cloudy background, the coming storm.

The silver balloons braving the storm, ascending without fear.

There is one that covers itself with a red hat,

covering more than half its face.

Pretending that nothing is happening.

We all have some kind of silver dreams

We all ascend together in the bleak bleak sky.

We all know…

Whatever goes up,

comes down.

“Silver Balloon in a Bleak Bleak Sky” is a mixed medium painting, created with Chinese ink and acrylic paint on watercolour paper.

Silver to me is something psychedelic, something dreamy. I always have a fascination over silver coloured balloons floating in the air. Balloons have an uncanny resemblance to the human face. The Chinese ink on paper created a sense of unspeakable darkness, seems to signify our world of uncertainty.

Kia Yee’s work of the hand-sewn head dress appears in the distance, trying to cover its face, or is it trying to cover its eyes, attempting to ignore the bleakness that is surrounding it.

This work attempts to create a strange and uneasy feeling, floating in the air.

Trained as an art teacher, Nick Ng worked primarily as a theatre director before joining Nanyang Girls’ High School as a drama teacher. His theatre performances focused mainly on social and political issues taking the form of simple and clean aesthetics. Usually fragmented and highly visual, the purpose is often to research, understand and present a particular phenomenon rather than telling a story. As Nick teaches in an all-female school, his work has started to navigate towards exploring teenage and young female issues. He also holds an MA in Arts Pedagogy and Practice from Goldsmiths, University of London.
