Grey Projects is proud to present Manner of Spitting, an exhibition of acts and interventions in public spaces. Curated by Justin Loke, Manner of Spitting is part of Grey Projects' Young Curators Programme series.
If art was a visual language, would it be characterised, like speech, with local elements such as accents and tonal inflections? How do these elements then, affect and explore the existence and necessity of local elements in their practice, through presentation and characteristics of works produced by artists born or based here? In Manner of Spitting, artists public interventions’. These interventions are documented on-site performances, happenings, and mischiefs. Presented in the past tense, this group show could be viewed as an aftermath of a series of happenings, centred around the heartlands of Tiong Bahru.

Justin Loke is a member of the art collective Vertical Submarine. In 2007, he was selected, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, as the Singaporean representative to the Global Youth Exchange: Youth Visual Culture in Tokyo and Kyoto. Together with the art collective, he received the Credit Suisse Art Residency Award, the grand prize of President’s Young Talents 2009 organised by the Istana and Singapore Art Museum, and Celeste Prize 2011 (New York). Loke is also the recipient of Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation Arts Award 2009. Currently, he is one of the Associate Directors of TheatreWorks (Singapore), part of the Associate Artist Research Programme at The Substation.
