Emote/Icon Pt. 2 featuring Joshua Yang and Lynn Lu

Grey Projects is proud to present Emote/Icon, which takes as its investigative premise the pandemic sensation of the recurrence of time, and the cross-transformation of the durational and the ritual. This exhibition draws together two of Singapore's best mid-career practitioners, Lynn Lu and Joshua Yang, with their strengths in the practice of durational craft through drawing, painting, live performance and video.
Lu and Yang each navigates this contract between thought and time, picking on the everyday absurdities while illustrating how multifaceted a memory of a moment can be. Emote/Icon suggests a life for image - not as the rapid-response and of-the-moment emoticon or snapshot - but as the transmission space for temporalities that are untimely, meditative, and singular without being merely linear.

About the artists
Joshua Yang
Joshua Yang was born in 1974 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2003, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, he founded the art collective, Vertical Submarine, which has been active in the local and international art scene.
In 2005, he won first prize in the UOB Painting of the Year for the Abstract category. Other awards include the coveted Credit Suisse Artist Residency Award 2009, The President’s Young Talents Award 2009 and the Singapore Art Show Judges’ Choice 2005. His drawings began to receive attention when he completed a forty-eight-hour drawing marathon in 2007. His works, which are predominantly site-specific time-based drawings employing a single-continuous line, have been featured in local and regional Biennales, including the Singapore Biennale 2008 and the Dojima River Biennale 2009 (Osaka). He has received commissions from public institutions as well as private collectors for his work. These include the Bishop’s quarters in Malaysia, Marymount MRT station in Singapore and the Dojima Performing Arts Theatre in Japan.
Yang is currently living and working in Singapore, and has completed projects in Spain, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, The Philippines, Mexico City, Australia, and Germany.
Lynn Lu
Lynn Lu (PhD, AFHEA) is a visual artist from Singapore, trained in the US, France, Japan, and Australia.
Her research-led multidisciplinary practice emerges from her interests in context and site specificity, participation and collaboration, and the poetics of absurdity. Engaging vigorously with the present reality of all that is here-and-now, the meaning of her works often manifests in the resonant relationships created between herself and her audience, and between the audience themselves.
Lynn exhibits and performs extensively worldwide. Selected venues include National Gallery Singapore (2022), SFMOMA (2021), Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (2019), Framer Framed (2018), Science Gallery London (2017), Saatchi Gallery (2017), Palais de Tokyo (2015), The Barbican (2015), Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2013), Tate Modern (2010), Beijing 798 Art Zone (2009), and Singapore Art Museum (2007).
