Grey Projects Artist-in-Residence: Kim Farkas

We had the pleasure of chatting with Kim Farkas before he left the artist residency at Grey Projects. Together with Jason Wee, Kim discusses his time and relationship with various key people in Singapore, such as Peranakan Theatre performer GT Lye, and the ideas he hopes to explore in his next work.

Kim Farkas (b. 1988, Paris, France) is a Paris-based artist of Singaporean (Peranakan) and American descent. His luminous installations, videos, and sculptures analyze the transnational movements of communities, commodities, and spirits. His works generate a layered sensorial response to relationships between ancestral heritage and post-industrial conditions. Compositing ancient forms and new technologies of facture, Farkas manifests a reflective space between the transmission of ritual and an unevenly distributed economy – one in which worldly attainment and social dignity for diasporic communities is deferred to the afterlife, specifically in a world of increasingly migrant bodies.

Kim Farkas’ project and residency at Grey Projects was supported by DRAC Île de France and the “Résidences Sur Mesure” program of the French Institute. He is represented by Downs & Ross, NYC.
