We’re pleased to welcome our latest artist-in-residence, Felix Kalmenson! Felix is a Russian-born Toronto-based artist, with a practice in installation, video, and performance. His recent works have been focused on historical and contemporary narratives of conflict and mediation, working with found footage, archives, original footage and speculative fictions in video and installation works. He is currently working on a project, ‘At Root’, which traces the extraction, propagation, and the dispersal of plant knowledge through the British Empire’s colonial botanical garden network.
During his two-month residency in Singapore, he will be researching on the colonial history of Gutta Percha, a plant that was essential for the manufacturing of submarine telegraph cables, which formed the logistical backbone of the British colonial empire.
